Mike Middleton, MBA, CFA, is the founder of Q1 Capital and a recognized leader in investment banking to private Canadian technology companies. Prior to entering the field, Mike worked in the financial services industry and was the Founder and President of a niche Canadian consumer products’ firm.
Mike has dedicated the past 26 years to investment banking with a focus on high-technology, advanced manufacturing, and consumer product companies. Progressing from Special Situations Research Analyst to Director of Research and Managing Partner at two leading Canadian private investment banks, including what is now GMP Securities, Mike co-founded his own boutique investment bank (Fusion Capital Partners) in 2001 with the primary mandate to serve the unique M&A and financing needs of private Canadian companies.
Within these roles, Mike has worked with both private and public companies, located throughout North America, Europe, China and Australia. Mike has looked at over 1,000 firms and worked with companies across a broad range of sectors and industries. A small sample of the companies that Mike has worked with include ThoughtCorp (IT Services), DSPA (Incentive and Compensation Management solutions to the insurance industry), Maddocks Systems (Transportation Management Software), Leitch Technology Corporation (Broadcast/video post-production hardware/ software), ATS Automation Tooling Systems (advanced automation, manufacturing & inspections systems), The Learning Company (education/entertainment software), Enghouse Systems (software/technology solutions) and Wescam (Imaging, targeting and airborne transmission systems for defense, military & law).
Mike has a reputation for delivering value to his clients. He brings relevant expertise, an extensive network, and an uncompromising approach to advising clients and negotiating transactions. Mike’s objective is to provide entrepreneurs with a level of professional service that previously was only available to large public companies. He has an excellent track record in the successful completion of mandates and has been featured in several Canadian business publications for his work.
Having successfully founded and built three businesses, Mike also brings an entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to every client engagement. From 1988 to 1992, Mike founded and grew a consumer products firm that manufactured product in Haiti and sold into the U.S., Canadian, and Australian markets. Since 2001, Mike has focused his efforts on providing M&A, capital financing, and financial advisory services to private Canadian technology companies, most recently through Q1 Capital Partners. Under his leadership, Q1 Capital has become a successful Canadian investment banking boutique focused on meeting the unique needs of private, technology-centric Canadian companies.
Mike holds an honours BA degree from the University of Toronto, an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurial Studies from the Schulich School of Business, and is a CFA charterholder.
Jessica Zhang, BCom, joined Q1 Capital in 2016. Previously, she worked as a Tax Associate at State Street Bank and as a Private Equity Analyst at a leading partner of China Construction Bank. In both roles, she developed complex financial models and extensively analyzed accounting statements.
As a Private Equity Analyst, she conducted the research, valuation and due diligence of potential acquisitions. She has also completed two finance internships at Fortune 500 companies.
Jessica holds an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business, with a concentration in Finance & Accounting and with a minor in Economics.
Entrepreneur in Residence
Rob Moffat, BA, ICD.D, is a serial entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in building high growth technology companies. Rob is a veteran of the wireless and enterprise software industries and was instrumental in founding and growing Metex Systems, Objectools, UMS, and Wallace Wireless. Wallace was acquired by Vocera Communications of San Jose, CA in December 2010.
At Q1 Capital, Rob is focused on maximizing shareholder value in the technology sector and is a co-founder of Centrallo, a business continuity and productivity software tool.
Rob is a graduate of the University of Toronto, as well as the Institute of Corporate Directors. He is a frequent and lively speaker on wireless technologies, business continuity and disaster recovery, and security technologies.
